| Signs and symptoms are: intense burning at the sting site; after 4 - 12 hours a burning sensation and pins and needles usually in the hands, feet, face and scalp; excessive sensitivity of the skin; lack of muscle coordination; involuntary movements, tremors and muscle weakness; slow heart rate (55 bpm or below); raised blood pressure; difficulty in swallowing and excessive salivation;
speech difficulty; excessive perspiration; headaches, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea; droopy eyelids; restlessness and anxiety and urine retention. Respiratory distress is a major complication and can result in death. Antivenom must only be administered in the case of severe systemic envenomation. |
